Chicago – Chi-Town, The Windy City, The City By the Lake, truly is “My Kind of Town.” However you refer to the Second City, it is a must-see on anyone’s list of travel destinations. My husband and I had a chance to spend a few days at the heart of downtown at The Peninsula Chicago, a luxury hotel worthy of its five-star distinction. Everything about this hotel spelled elegance.

Located on Chicago’s coveted Magnificent Mile right next to Water Tower Place and not far from the John Hancock Building, you could not ask for a better place to enjoy the city. We could see Lake Michigan, which is within walking distance, and the hotel is close to an abundance of shopping, dining, and culture which make up the Magnificent Mile. At night we enjoyed spectacular views of the city all lit up, which is something to see!

The Hotel

The Peninsula Chicago opened about 20 years ago and is part of The Peninsula Hotels based in Hong Kong. Currently, there are only ten properties across Asia and the U.S., so it’s truly a unique experience. From the two-story lobby to the grand dining room, you can see the rich detail and style of the hotel. Marble floors, ornate chandeliers, artwork, and floor-to-ceiling windows are just some of the things you will see as you walk the property. As you look around, you know you are someplace special.

the room

We stayed in the Executive Suite, which had a beautiful living room, tastefully decorated with a great mix of comfort and workspace.  On one side was a full-length desk, complete with any connection or port you might need for a computer or other equipment. There was a pull-out drawer with a full-sized printer, a large wall-mounted flat-panel TV, and a drawer with most anything you might need to do remote work. It had lit shelves which were decorated with pieces appropriate for a setting.

There were wall panels around the room that controlled lights and other functions of the room. At the foyer was one that could control all lights in the room with a single touch. It was a great mix of cool tech and luxury comfort. Two other sides of the room were floor-to-ceiling glass to overlook the city. Day or night, the view was something to enjoy!

Down the hall, you’ll find the bathroom with two separate sinks, a glass-enclosed shower, and a soaking tub. As you would expect, the tub was below a large window keeping the city view there for your enjoyment. The bathroom was fully stocked with anything you might need, and the plush robe and slippers were incredibly comfortable.

Further down the hall from the bathroom was the bedroom, complete with a plush king-sized bed with soft lighting, a large wall-mounted TV, a vanity dressing table with an illuminated 14″ mirror, and abundant drawer space. My favorite touch was the nightstands, where the top drawer opened with cables already wired to charge any phone or tablet. They really thought of everything!

Sitting in our bed, we had two walls that were all glass looking out to the city. The room felt large because of the windows. It gave that open feeling as we took advantage of the tremendous views. The bed was comfortable, and the pillows were perfect for a good night’s sleep.

The peninsula spa

While there is much available around the hotel, The Peninsula Chicago offers so much inside; you could find yourself never choosing to leave. It has a large, very complete gym that makes you forget you are at a hotel. With a fantastic two-story heated indoor pool enclosed in glass, this hotel offers incredible views while you relax inside. It also has an excellent spa with a broad set of service offerings to pamper yourself while you are there.  After a workout, swim, or spa, head down to the great eating venues at the hotel.

The Z Bar and The Lobby Restaurant

We ate at the Z Bar and The Lobby restaurants. The Z Bar is a rooftop terrace where you can enjoy amazing views of the city. It’s a bar with lounge-style tables to enjoy a drink or a small plate. Like much of the hotel, it had entire glass walls looking outside. There is an outside patio that sits atop the famous Michigan Avenue. Facing the Water Tower Place, the views at night with all the lights in the area was astounding! Pair that with good food and drink, you have yourself a pleasant experience.

The Lobby is a full-service restaurant, and we enjoyed a great meal. We had fantastic service and enjoyed the various appetizers and meals to complete our day. The staff (like the rest of the hotel) was amiable and patient during all our interactions. Chicago is known as a friendly big city, and you can see and experience that during your stay.

The conclusion

If you are looking for a unique venue in a vibrant city, The Peninsula Chicago is an exceptional choice! From the moment you walk in, you will know you are someplace special. It’s an exclusive property located at a top location!
