My sister and I wanted to go somewhere warm to escape the winter weather, having already arrived here in Maryland. We decided to go somewhere not too far away, relatively easy to travel (a nonstop flight was our preference), and where good food is served.
My sister is a world traveler, so it’s hard to plan a trip that would make her oooh and aaahh. One place she hasn’t been to is Texas. She’s always wanted to go, more specifically, to Austin. It was a toss-up between Houston and Austin, but Houston was just too compelling (plus, there’s a nonstop flight from BWI)! So off to Houston we went for a long weekend (don’t worry, Austin, we will get back to you).
The Post Oak Hotel at Uptown
We stayed at The Post Oak Hotel, Texas’ only Double Five-Star rated hotel and spa and Houston’s first and only hotel to receive this award. It’s located near shopping areas such as Galleria, Uptown Park, and many others.
The hotel was very spacious and had an array of conference rooms and restaurants. There’s a 20,000 square foot spa and fitness center, an outdoor pool with cushioned lounge chairs and rentable cabanas, and a designer shop. A couple of unique features included a partnership with Rolls-Royce dealership, where they had a showroom onsite and a helicopter pad access!
The Lobby
Upon entering the lobby, I couldn’t help but notice the enormous and elegant chandelier right in the middle of the sitting area, adorned with Swarovski crystals. The lobby was beautifully designed with a modern flair. The furniture was rich in colors and just felt upscale.
The holiday decorations were up when we arrived and gave the hotel an added vibe during our stay. Silver and gold theme colors were scattered throughout a hallway, with black and white drawings of nature scenes made with 3D elements to make it come alive (additions of wooden branches, leaves, snow, icicles, etc.). It gave an elegant and festive feel.
The Room
We stayed in a spacious Luxury King room, with a sitting area and a credenza desk. A pop-up 50-inch television separated the bed and the sitting area, operated by a push of a button. Why is it more fun to push a button and have something appear?
We shared a king bed with luxurious 500-count Egyptian cotton linens, which were incredibly comfortable. The pillows were the perfect complement to ensure a great night’s sleep.
Keeping on the theme of excellent touches, when you put your feet on the floor to get out of bed, a light came on that illuminates that area. It was a night light to help guide you when you get up in the middle of the night. I have never seen that feature in a hotel! These little features certainly made quite an impression!
To the side of the bed, there was a phone/tablet that controls room temperature and lighting. You may view the hotel restaurant menus on this same device, place an order, have a valet get your car, and more!
I accidentally discovered that the window drapes could be operated to close or open with just a single tug (it was pretty neat to watch). I later found out a switch in the hallway controlled the drapes (good thing my husband didn’t join me; he probably would have wanted these types of controls for our drapes at home)!
The white and gray marbled bathroom had a double-sink vanity, a soaking tub, and a glass-enclosed shower. The lighted mirror was enormous, spanning the entire wall, adding dimension to the already luxurious room. The robes were super plush, and the slippers were the most padded and comfortable hotel slippers I’ve ever had!
Oh! Another interesting detail: they provided a set of dumbbells in the room, which allows you to do a light workout without going to the gym (no excuses now)! Someone really thought about the in-room experience!
The Restaurants
We enjoyed breakfast at Bloom and Bee, where they specialize and serve locally inspired cuisine. I love the floral décor carried throughout the restaurant, such as the colorful hand-blown glass flower display on the ceiling and brightly colored chair fabrics reminiscent of a floral garden.
We ordered the delicious breakfast quesadilla to take advantage of the local southwestern cuisine! We enjoyed this so much; we ordered it again another day! By the way, this is big enough to share for two, so FYI.
We dined at Craft F&B for lunch, where they serve pub-style fare. The restaurant has plenty of wood décor, furnishings, and industrial touches with lighting and bar stools. The vibes here are more casual dining and perfect for watching games on the television. We shared a tasty Baconic Burger and Chef’s Salad.
Final Thoughts
The Post Oak Hotel at Uptown is a first-class establishment. As you would expect from a 5-star hotel, the level of service here was top-notch. From the warm greeting upon arrival to the turn-down service in the evening, you felt the Texas charm and hospitality.
While the hotel offers such excellent amenities and services, it does come at a pretty price tag. The average nightly rate starts at $500.
If you want to splurge and have an unforgettable hotel experience during your vacation, stay at The Post Oak Hotel at Uptown. It is an upscale place to go for a very special occasion to create a unique memory.
